The Mt Pleasant Pottery Group was established in 1960 and, prior to the 2011 earthquakes, had a membership of over 100  drawn mainly from the eastern suburbs, but also from across Christchurch and surrounding towns. Although membership has dropped significantly since demolition of the Group’s studio, as part of the Mt Pleasant Community Centre, a core of very active members remains and many of the club’s activities, including adult classes, demonstrations, workshops, sales days and the annual exhibition continue.

Potters range from those who are nationally recognized and experienced through to total beginners.

New members are always welcome.

Our new club rooms are based at Phillips town School, Community Hub on Nursery road, room 7 which is on the edge of the inner-city area. We have a beautiful class room, a great working area with 9 electric wheels, slab-roller, lots of research books, and space for Raku firings.

We share the school spaces with other craftspeople, men's shed, gardens, and other community related groups. We are excited to have this after 5 years of nothing. Come and enjoy our potting area all are welcome.

Say Hello To Our Friendly Team OF TUTORS

Introducing the tutors & samples of their work

Shona Clarkson
Geneviève Forrester

Chairman

Secretary

Shona has have been potting for over 28 yrs having started in Dunedin and attending the Otago Polytechnic School of Art where she received a Diploma of Ceramic Art in 1990. Since moving to Christchurch Shona has been teaching pottery in the various groups in Christchurch. On her annual trips to Australia she has been tutoring weekend workshops in Queensland.

She enjoys working in her home studio always playing and experimenting. Her work has moved from wheel thrown work to hand building. Shona says “I like the freedom to use the clay as a canvas to make marks by stamping, embossing, printing and then shape it into what ever is the project of that time, there will never be enough time to complete my present and future works.” Click here to visit Shona's potters page.

I am a Belgian national, originally trained as a scientist and a teacher. I had a first encounter with pottery when, as a young adult, I got interested in the work of a Belgian ceramist, who was close friend of my parents.

When my family moved to Christchurch in 2003, I finally realized my long waited dream to join a pottery class and learn more about the craft. I like hand built natural organic forms and animals, but I also throw traditional functional ware on the wheel.

Also, when I learn something that I am really passionate about, I like to share it and pass it on for others to enjoy.

I enjoy teaching children and beginners the art of clay.
